In Miller Hudson’s guest column in your Dec. 16 issue regarding the Administration’s recent survey of state employees, Mr. Hudson incorrectly interpreted and reported survey findings. The survey indicated that 58 percent of state employees are NOT seriously considering leaving state government employment in the next 12 months. Rather, 22 percent are considering such a change in employment. Mr. Hudson errantly reversed these findings.
While any turnover of employees disrupts the continuity of the services the state provides our citizens, the fact that 1 out of 5 employees may be leaving in the next 12 months is not out of the ordinary.
This survey of state employees has been an essential part of Governor Hickenlooper’s effort to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and elegance of state government. The Administration recognizes that the people who are best equipped to help us improve delivery of government services to our citizens are the state employees themselves who are on the front line of providing such services. By collaboratively engaging state employees in this constructive dialogue, the survey has provided this Administration with valuable baseline data and identified unique opportunities for improving state government for all.

Response from Miller Hudson: I stand corrected on the portion of state employees considering imminent departure from state government, albeit my black and white printout was misleading. Unfortunately, this means there was absolutely nothing of interest uncovered in the employee survey. Elegance? Try gratitude. The bulk of state employees perform those janitorial tasks necessary in a 21st century society which most of us wouldn’t consider — corrections, custodial care of the profoundly handicapped and criminally insane, highway maintenance and tax collection to name just a few.
