Despite the knocks, British cuisine is among the best!
Dear Jay (if I may),
As an avid reader of your column (Jay Fox’s No More Mr. Nice Guy) I was surprised, nay shocked, at your criticism of the food from my dearly beloved homeland! But I do note that you qualify your article by saying that it was some years ago that you tasted the delights of British cooking. If you were referring to some 25 or 30 years ago, personally, I would have to agree with your summary of the British kitchen. But today is a whole new ball game (to use an Americanism!!).
From the humble fare from our country pubs (some of which probably pre-date the food on Mayflower!!) to our most fashionable Michelin starred restaurants (dotted throughout the green and pleasant land I call home) our culinary expertise has, without doubt, grown from alleged mediocrity to be close to the best in the world. Indeed, I note that this Field of Dreams known as America has opened its arms (or indeed mouth!) to the refined tastings offered by some of our finest British chefs!
And so I would entreat our American guests who desire to visit “This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England” this Spring for the Royal Wedding to taste our fine British fare, be it in London or further afield and declare to their friends that Yes! British cuisine is Good! And after the Royal Wedding, guests new and old would be warmly welcomed to return for the 2012 Olympics and further sample those delightful dishes whose nomenclature may confuse — Yorkshire pudding (which is not a pudding!), toad in the hole, spotted dick, I could go on……..
