FOX: ATTENTION ALL WINE LOVERS

LOTSA STUFF GOING ON all around Denver. It’s summer, time to play outside. Oh, 100+ degrees outside, maybe not. Play inside where it’s air conditioned.

Later this month, Club W, a curated wine community (I have no idea what that is) will launch a multi-city tour of events designed to bring their original web experience to life. The premiere event, “Unwined, A Wine Party Without the Rules,” will take place in Denver at the Exdo Event Center (1399 35th St) on Friday, July 21st from 7-10 p.m., and again on Saturday, July 22nd from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Attendees can taste wine the way they want to drink it: at their own pace, surrounded by friends and DJ’s. There will be food trucks providing a variety of free grub to help absorb all the great wine you will undoubtedly consume.

Club W was created to take the hassle, guesswork and pretentiousness out of enjoying a great bottle of wine at a reasonable price. The first online wine market place of its kind, users complete a Palate Profile tapping their preferences for everyday tastes like coffee and salt. Wines are then delivered to their doorstep after being personally selected by Club W’s curators — wine advisors to the world’s best restaurants including Thomas Keller’s Per Se and The French Laundry. Bottom line: they’re legit. Admission is $50 which includes wine AND grub. For $60 admit, you get a free month’s subscription to Club W — basically three bottles of wine for $10.

A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to First Descents, a non-profit organization that offers young adult cancer fighters and survivors a free weeklong outdoor adventure experience. During the event, for an additional donation of $20, guests will be able to pull a mystery bottle of wine from the Club W Wine Wall, varying in type from every day to specialty and limited-edition blends, with all proceeds directly benefiting First Descents.

Aaron Forman, co-owner, sommelier and GM at Table 6 (609 Corona St., 303-831-8800; www.table6denver.com) is one of the curators at the above event. If you haven’t dined at Table 6 you haven’t really dined. Chef Scott Parker is so creative and so talented it’s hard to find an iota of error in his preparation. What he and his staff turn out in that tiny kitchen is unbelievable.

Over the years I’ve been asked many times why I go the National Restaurant Association convention every May. Cuz the food is free and yummy. Seriously, I go to check out the products entering the retail food market place. Seems like when new products enter the market they are available only in food service. Makes sense. The manufacturer has a limited cost to enter the market and gets fast feedback. After a period of time, a few products enter the retail segment of the market. Lately, in part due to companies like Costco and Sam’s Club, vendors can test new items without grocery chains having to commit to large quantities of items that may not sell. It’s a win win. Now, more new food products are entering the retail segment faster than ever before.

One new item I’m particularly impressed with is Johnsonville’s Brat Burgers. I don’t particularly like brats. But these suckas are terrific. They have removed the casing, formed a patty, and voila! A burger with yummy sausage flavor. Why didn’t I think of that? I’d be rich! These brat patties come in original, mild Italian, cheddar, and chorizo — and are available at King Soopers, Wal*Mart and Sam’s Club.

On a fun-to-eat note, maybe the hottest items on menus these days are sliders. They come on all sizes, shapes, makes and models. Recently Ramfeezled Rich and I ate at Annie’s Café (3100 E. Colfax Ave., 303-355-8197; www.annies-cafe.com) where we feasted on a variety of sliders. Bbq brisket, cheeseburger, and sloppy Joes, all priced at $7.99 for three sliders and a side of great fries. The brisket came topped with coleslaw. All were good but the cheeseburgers were really good. The house fries, ordered with green chili, came hot (zingy) but very good. We then splurged on a hunk of apple and blueberry pie. They were edible but not what we were hoping for. Not sure about the apple, but the blueberry tasted like fresh from a can.

I’d like to cap this column with a burning question. On the subject of stupidity and a giant waste of money, how much do you think the Walmart* folks spent to move the * from the middle to the end. Just cuz some dude in Bentonville, Arkansas thought it looked better? Forty, fifty million dollars? Maybe more? Old Sam sure would be turning over in his grave about now.
