Letters to the Editor

Letter: Tell us, what does the amendment actually say?

Dear Editor,

I was disappointed to see a lack in the usual thoroughness of Statesman reporting in one of last week’s articles, “Coalition rallies to defeat personhood amendment” by Ashley Chase Sinclair. It was an article about opposition to the amendment, so logic would ask, “what does the amendment say?”

The wording of the amendment was not included in the article, which is an important, objective omission.

From the Secretary of State’s website:

The title as designated and fixed by the Board is as follows:

“An amendment to the Colorado constitution protecting pregnant women and unborn children by defining ‘person’ and ‘child’ in the Colorado criminal code and the Colorado wrongful death act to include unborn human beings.”

The ballot title and submission clause as designated and fixed by the Board is as follows:

“Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado constitution protecting pregnant women and unborn children by defining ‘person’ and ‘child’ in the Colorado criminal code and the Colorado wrongful death act to include unborn human beings?”

Thanks.
